build your own website

Are there any websites which help you to build your own site – like those blogging support services you introduced me to last year?

    Hi Alys

If you are completely new to building websites I suggest you have a look at Google Sites. This will help you build a website for FREE without you needing to know all the technical bits and pieces.

There are several different styles and templates to choose from and plenty of tips to help you get started.

In order to use Google Sites you need to create a Google account, if you don’t already have one. This is just the same as if you wanted to use Google’s free blogging application, Blogger.

To get started with Google Sites you need to go to this web page sites.google.com and follow the instructions.

If you need further assistance, or if Google Sites is not what you were looking for, it would be easier if you contacted me directly through Digital Unite. You can do this by sending a request from the Contact Us page on this website.

  2. Google sites isn’t one of the easier places to build a website tbh, not in my experience anyway and they don’t look all that fantastic when you’ve managed to get your head round it and produced something.
Try weebly.com or yola.com, where you can build a free website with free hosting very easily and they look nice too.

Thanks Gillian – I hadn’t heard of weebly or yola, so I’ve had a quick look at both now.

I thought weebly.com was particularly easy to use and definitely a better option than Google Sites.

I have used and created a free website using the above, and the hosting (500MB)is also free, along with your own email address. There are several templates, and it was fairly straightforward to use. When I used it I changed the domain to my own one for free, but I think now there may be a charge of around a fiver per year for a co.uk name.
