  1. Hi Charles,

There’s an awful lot of choice out there! :o )

The first thing to decide is whether to buy a desktop PC or a laptop PC. If you have space for one and prefer to use it in one place, a desktop is the one to get. They are also easier to fix when there’s a problem, as the keyboard, screen and base unit are separate.

If you want a computer that you can use anywhere in the house and put away when you’ve finished, take a look at laptops (aka notebooks). There’s also a smaller type of notebook called a netbook.

If you just want the PC for email and web browsing, a low-spec (and therefore cheaper!) machine will be sufficient for your purposes.

The next choice to make is which operating system to go for. Most people go for Windows and there are three versions of it at the moment. The oldest is XP, which is generally found on low-end netbooks. Most computers will have Vista and the latest ones will have Windows 7, which has just come out and is broadly a much-improved Vista. You will probably find many shops are discounting PCs with Vista in order to stock new ones equipped with Windows 7, so there are bargains about.

That’s just a very brief overview; please come back if you want more detailed advice!
