We had the following question via email from someone who uses AOL:

I’m partially sighted and am now having problems reading some incoming email.

What can I do?

  1. AOL does not have an internal magnifier that will make the AOL window larger, however you can enlarge the font in e-mail, instant message, and chat by going to AOL Keyword: Preferences and clicking on Font, Text & Graphics.

If you are using a Windows pc, you will also have a built in Magnifier. In Windows XP you go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Accessibility and you should see Magnifier listed in the menu. In Windows Vista and Windows 7 it’s in the Ease of Access Centre (hold down the Windows key on the keyboard and press U). It won’t magnify the whole screen unless you have Windows 7. Instead you get a split screen effect so half the window is normal and the other half is magnified. As you run your mouse across the text, it shows it magnified in the magnifier window. There is a better explanation and also more help with seeing the screen at http://www.abilitynet.org.uk/myway/screen/text/magnifier.htm
