Whether you are looking to return to work after a career break, are looking to earn some extra money on the side or want a whole new career, there are thousands of opportunities online. Indeed, many companies solely advertise on the internet for new staff, so it is well worth familiarising yourself with online job search and application methods.

In this guide, we will be focusing on finding jobs through the Job Centre Plus online job search, but there are many alternatives.

You’ll need:

A computer connected to the internet.

Follow these step-by-step instructions to find a job online

Step 1: Go to http://jobseekers.direct.gov.uk (link opens in a new window).

Step 2: You will see a form where you have a number of options through which to search for job opportunities. For this example, we are going to search by ‘Job title’. In this first field, we will type ‘shop assistant’.

Step 3: To find job openings in your local area (or the area in which you wish to work), you need to focus the search by ‘Postcode or location’. For this example, we should search within ‘5 miles’ of Winchester. To select the radius, click the dropdown Distance menu.

Step 4: You can choose to search all matching jobs at this point, or you may wish to narrow the results by the number of hours you would like to work each week and ways of working e,g. ‘Evenings’ or ‘Term time’. For our example, we shall choose 1-16 hours, both ‘Perm/temp’. We shall leave the other boxes unticked.

Step 5: Click Search.

Step 6: Another screen will now come up with possible matches for the job title that you input in Step 2. Choose up to three job titles from the selection and then click Search.

Step 7: You will then be shown a page of results from your search. In this example, we have been shown 17 possible job opportunities on the ‘Job search results’ page.

Step 8: The search results will display job titles and a little information about the position, for example the ‘Location’, ‘Date posted’ and, in some cases the ‘Wage’. Sometimes, the ‘Wage’ is shown in fairly broad terms e.g. ‘MEETS NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE’.

Step 9: Scroll through the results to see which, if any, of the jobs appeal to you. For this example, we are going to take steps to apply for the first position shown: ‘Assistant Unit Manager – Westholme’. Click on the job title.

Step 10: You will be taken to a new page with more detailed information about the job in which are interested.

Step 11: If you are interested in applying, look at the information under ‘How to apply’. In this instance, you must visit a different website and follow the instructions on the website.

Step 12: You could also choose to print this information off, this is particularly useful if you are looking for a job for somebody else. Click Printer friendly and a new page will display this information in black and white, ready for you to print. To print, hold the Ctrl and P keys.

Good luck!

___________________________________

I used to be able to print4x6 very easily using Windows Live Photo Gallery. However, the program now only gives me A4 option. I am wondering if this is because I have recently downloaded Photoscape editing software, which I love as it is so easy to use, and offers all the tools I want. Printing from it though is confusing.
I contacted the Epson help line when this first happened, and they said I had the correct drivers, and suggested that I download Epson Easy Print. I did this, and it will work, but I still prefer the Windows Live process. Wondering if there is any way of getting the 4×6 size back

Jacklyn Williams

Buying in bulk at wholesale prices can make sense both for everyday essential items that you use time and time again and for supplies for special events from a small family celebration to a huge wedding party. You can save money, time and inconvenience by shopping less often, avoiding tiring shopping trips, additional spending temptations, long check-out queues and heavy bags to carry back home.

In this guide you’ll learn, step-by-step, how to navigate an online wholesale distributor’s site, find the items you want, and place your first order.

We’re going to use Shorters Club as an example of this kind of site. However, there are other sites that work in the same sort of way that you can also use.

You’ll need:

a computer with an internet connection

a debit or credit card for payment.

This guide is based on a PC running Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 8, but the steps in this process are very similar for Mac users or if you’re using a different browser.

Follow these step-by-step instructions to buy wholesale good online

Step 1: Go to Shorters Club, and to begin your wholesale shopping experience, click on start shopping.

Step 2: A new page will open taking you to their online shop where you’ll see tab names similar to shopping aisles: ‘Groceries’, ‘Off Licence’, ‘Home & Pet’, ‘Kitchen’, ‘Health & Beauty’, ‘Workplace’, ‘Baby and Toddler’ and ‘Bargain Basement’. You’re also able to look at ‘Top offers’, ‘Previously Bought items’ and ‘what’s Happening Now’, which lets you see what other shoppers are viewing, rating, Facebook ‘liking’ or buying.

If you click on these names you can browse the site, much like wandering around, looking at the contents of different aisles of a store.

Before you start to shop, so as you’ll see only products that are available from your nearest depot, enter your delivery address postcode and then click start shopping. You’ll see the postcode you entered confirmed on the top right-hand side of the screen. (If you’ve made a mistake, you can simply click change postcode.)

Step 3: If you know what you’re looking for, you can refine your search straightaway by typing key words into the ‘Search store’ window and then clicking find to go to matching items, for example ‘pet food’. Your options will be displayed. You can sort these by price or name, and choose to see 20, 40, or 60 products on a page. If you’re happy to shop in this way, move on to Step 6 of this guide. Otherwise move on now to Step 4.

Step 4: Hold your mouse pointer over a tab to see a compartmentalised list of its contents. In our example, Groceries is sub-divided into ‘Food Cupboard’, ‘Confectionery’, ‘Crisps & Snacks’, ‘Drinks’, ‘Tinned & Packet’ and ‘Bakery’. Each of these is further sub-divided into different products, for example under Confectionery you can choose between ‘Sweets’ and ‘Chocolate’.

Step 5: Click on a product category that interests you to find out more. At this stage, you can either filter further by clicking on a chosen sub-category, or browse through all the products in this section.

Step 6: Click on the picture or description of an item to be taken to the details of that item.

Step 7: You can now ‘click to see more details…’ or look at related products. It’s also possible to email to a friend, add to favourites, or Facebook ‘Like’ the item.

If you like what you see, simply click on + add to basket. Doing this will save the details of this item until you’re ready to go to the checkout, just as if you’d put a product into your shopping trolley. The default quantity is set to one pack; if you want more of any item, simply click + add until you get the number you need. You’ll see the item(s) and the current sub-total appear in your Shopping Basket on the top right-hand side of the screen. This is where you can most easily make any later changes to the quantities you’ve selected by clicking + or – next to each item. As you change the quantities you’ll see the subtotal change. After adding each item to your basket you can click to choose to continue shopping by clicking another tab, view full basket or checkout.

Step 8: Continue shopping until you’ve all the items you need. Unit prices for each item, together with the current sub-total and postage cost continue to appear in your ‘Shopping Basket’.

Step 9: At any time, you can click on view full basket for an overview of your shopping. At this stage, if your shopping basket contains any alcohol or tobacco products, you will be asked to confirm that you’re over 18. Also from this screen you’re able to remove items by ticking the relevant tick box. You can also amend quantities by clicking into the ‘QTY’ window to the left of the number, pressing delete on your keyboard to clear the original number, and keying in the new quantity.

(After any changes, remember to click on update basket.) You can also enter any ‘ Discount Codes‘ and ‘Gift Card’ codes. After you’ve viewed your full shopping basket, you can continue shopping or checkout.

Step 10: When you’re ready, click the checkout button. This will bring you to a four-stage secure checkout screen. Before entering any personal or payment information online, always check that the website is secure. This is indicated by a yellow padlock icon at the top of the screen and a website address that starts with ‘https://’ (the ‘s’ stands for ‘secure’). Always take the utmost care to ensure your online safety.

Step 11: As you’ll be new to their website, you’ll be asked to enter your email address and a password. Be very careful to choose a safe password, which has to be entered twice to check for accuracy. (You must fill in all this information, but don’t worry, if you miss an item you’ll be prompted and not allowed to go further until you’ve completed the page.)

You can also tick to sign up to a newsletter if you wish. When you’ve done this, click on continue to move on from the ‘Welcome screen’.

Step 12: The ‘Delivery screen’ asks for your name, delivery address, and contact phone number. You must fill in an item if it’s marked with an asterisk (*), but again you’ll be prompted if you miss any information. When you’re ready click save address to move on to the second ‘Delivery screen’ where you can choose FedEx Express delivery or tick the appropriate box if delivery needs to be made between 9.00am and 5.00pm. You can also type in any special delivery instructions. When you’ve done this, click on continue to move on to the ‘Payment screen’.

Step 13: At the Payment screen, if you haven’t already done so, you’ll have another opportunity to “Sign up to the Shorters Club Newsletter for latest deals & news direct to your inbox”. You now need to enter your credit or debit card details, and click place order if you’re happy to make the payment.

At this point, if you’ve signed up for 3-D Secure – an added layer of security for online credit and debit card transactions – such as Visa’s ‘Verified by Visa’ and MasterCard’s ‘SecureCode’, you might be asked for another password. Enter this as required.

Your order will start to be processed when you’ve entered your payment information successfully and you should see a confirmation message on screen. You should also receive an order confirmation email.

Done!

Are you a bargain hunter? Do you know the type of product you’re looking for? Price comparison websites are a good way to find out the best deals from the comfort of your armchair without the need to dash around from place to place.

Sites such as Kelkoo and Pricerunner search the internet to find the best deals and then rank them for you. There are also financial comparison sites, such as Money Expert, where you can also find the best deals on financial products.

In this step-by-step guide, using Kelkoo as an example, we’re going to look at how to compare shopping prices online.

You’ll need:

a computer with an internet connection.

This guide is based on a PC running Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 8, but the steps in this process are very similar for Mac users or if you’re using a different browser.

Follow these step-by-step instructions to compare prices

Step 1: Go to Kelkoo (the website will open in a new window if you click on the link or you can open a new tab and type http://www.kelkoo.co.uk in the address bar).

Step 2: When you enter the site, you’ll find a drop-down menu labelled ‘All Categories’. This allows you to narrow down your search from a broad category of goods. If, however, you know the exact description or model of the item you want, you can type this straight into the window to the right of the ‘All Categories’ button. As you type, a drop-down list will appear giving you some likely choices that you can pick by clicking on them. From this point you can skip to Step 9 of this guide. Otherwise go straight on to Step 3.

Step 3: When you click on All Categories, you’ll see that each of the categories takes you to another sub-category to narrow your search down still further. Let’s look for a digital camera, by clicking on Electronics and then Photography.

Step 4: When you come to the sub-category page (in this case ‘Photography’), holding the mouse pointer over the item you’re interested in will allow you to select from a series of different features. For digital cameras, this includes ‘Brand’, ‘Camera type’, ‘Sensor resolution’ and ‘Product Line’. Some lists of features show more choices when this label is clicked.

Step 5: The numbers in brackets beside each entry tell you how many different items there are available in that category. For the purposes of this example, let’s look at the selection of 12 waterproof cameras.

Step 6: Now on the left-hand side of the screen you can refine your search, either by typing in some criteria in the ‘Refine by keyword’ window and clicking on the blue arrow, or by using the links and slider bars on the left-hand side of the screen. In our example, clicking and dragging the right-hand pointer on the ‘Budget’ slider bar towards the left to reduce the maximum price to £87.00 limits the range available to six cameras between the lowest price of £39.00 and our new £87.00 top limit.

Step 7: Having narrowed down the selection further, it is possible, by using the dropdown menu, to ‘Sort by Popularity’, ‘Price Ascending’, ‘Price Descending’, or ‘Title Ascending’. Hovering the mouse pointer over an image enables you to see a brief account of features, a list of retailers stocking the product and their prices.

Step 8: Click on View all results.

Step 9: You can now see, in more detail, the choices and prices for your chosen item. Click on the Visit Store button to visit the store of your choice.

Step 10: You’ll now be taken direct to the online store where your chosen item will be displayed ready for you.

To make absolutely sure you get the best deal, it’s a good idea to check out a few different price comparison sites before finally buying.

Happy bargain hunting!

I’ve recently downloaded Windows Live Photo Gallery 2011 (Build 15.4.3538.513). It’s great, and I am really appreciating the tagging facility.

Is there any way to display a directory / folder tree structure to make it simpler to navigate to a particular folder? At the moment there is a browser window with the oldest folders first. There are more than 100 folders spread over the last six years so navigating is getting quite complicated. Otherwise it meets my needs very well indeed.

Thanks, John.
