Mrs
My parents ( aged 78 and 85) have just been persuaded by my brother that the internet would be really useful for them. They are an ex- teacher and librarian so should have no problem learning – but need convincing! We would like to get them a simple economical computer to start off with. Do people have any recommendations please? Or any do’s don’t.

Economical – a new desktop PC / monitor bundle made by Acer, Compaq or similar will be about £280-£300 from direct.tesco.com or pcworld.co.uk Avoid Packard Bell or other DSG-specific brands.
Cheap laptop similar price, takes less space, less comfortable to use, more expensive to repair.
John Lewis sell PCs with 2 year warranty and initial free support. Aldi special offer PCs have 3 years warranty.
All above will be supplied with Windows Vista, which is not simple. Neither is XP.
The Linux based (not XP) netbook small laptops are a bit cheaper, simpler and include a lot more software. Downside is smaller screen / keyboard.
To save much on above prices go secondhand.

I work with older people (well older than me anyway – I’m 60) to make digital stories and I used 17″ laptops, I find that they are much better on the eyes especially is you wear specs. They can be a tad dearer than the smaller ones but well worth the outlay for a bigger screen.
