Hi Bob
There are some entries in the AVG forum relating to this error and suggesting possible solutions.
It looks like the main causes are either malware on your computer or some other antivirus software was installed an active on your computer when AVG was installed.

I had a look at Bob’s computer, which also had a catatonic new installation of Internet Explorer 8. We switched the default to the new Google Chrome browser, which ran many times faster and didn’t hang, unlike IE8.
In the Google Chrome browser we were able to download AVG 8.5, and when trying to uninstall 8.0 via the Control Panel, found that it wouldn’t uninstall, due to an error. However, running the 8.5 installer enabled the uninstallation of 8.0 and after a reboot, we ran the 8.5 installation again and this time, installed it.
We also checked for unnecessary startup programs, that were slowing it down.
Windows itself is still somewhat slow, especially when first started, but browsing is much faster and cleaner now in Google Chrome!
Maybe Google Desktop and some other programs could be completely removed (via Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel). They’d have to be checked, each one, for whether they are necessary, at all, or at startup.
